Silicon Box Announces It Joins Imec Automotive Chiplet Program to Strengthen Chip Supply Chains for Next-Generation Vehicles

Through the collaboration, Silicon Box will work with industry leaders to advance automotive-grade chiplet devices with advanced packaging.

SINGAPORE, 15 April 2025 – Silicon Box, an industry leader in advanced semiconductor packaging solutions, today announced that it has formally joined imec’s Automotive Chiplet Program (ACP), a collaborative research initiative aimed at accelerating chiplet technology adoption required to drive the development of next-generation vehicles. Chiplet technology is recognized as a critical solution to address rising costs and bottlenecks amidst rapidly increasing computing requirements for modern, software-defined vehicles. Silicon Box will support the ACP’s research initiative with its end-to-end know-how in chiplet interconnection, from consulting on optimal chiplet architecture for sustainable and scalable technology roadmaps, to turnkey solutions for advanced packaging and testing.

Accelerating Automotive (Chip) Innovation

Through imec’s Automotive Chiplet Program, Silicon Box will draw on its proprietary advanced packaging capabilities and capacity, and collaborate with other consortium members to accelerate chiplet solutions for modern vehicles.

Automotive Chiplet Interoperability: Help review system architectures and define interconnection protocols that meet stringent safety, reliability, performance and thermal requirements

Advanced Packaging R&D - De-risked Packaging: Support package development and material reviews to ensure chiplet connections meet automotive quality targets

Silicon Box Automotive Roadmap

At the sixth ACP Forum last November, Dr. BJ Han delivered a keynote on advanced packaging for automotive applications and how chiplet architecture specifically meets high compute needs of autonomous driving. The company’s participation in imec’s ACP will enhance alignment of its technology roadmap with emerging industry standards.

Silicon Box is already co-developing chiplet-based automotive-grade packages with customers for next-generation advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Last month, Silicon Box received an IATF 16949 Letter of Conformance (LoC) to support automotive-grade packaging solutions and is expected to achieve full certification in the coming months. Revenue from automotive customers grew at an annualized rate of 436% in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting the importance of the automotive sector to the company’s burgeoning business.

In October last year, Silicon Box announced it hit a 100-million-unit production milestone at it’s Singapore flagship foundry, while demonstrating industry-leading yield — proving that advanced panel-level packaging is ready to enable the chiplet era, and rapidly scale for the digital age. The company is planning its second facility in Novara, Italy , supporting the EU's strategic goal to produce 20% of the world's semiconductors by 2030 with first-of-a-kind technology. With production start targeting 2028, the Novara site will fully replicate Silicon Box’s panel-level packaging capacity and deliver a native test ecosystem, establishing the full semiconductor value chain from design through to final manufacturing and test in Europe. In an exclusive interview on the forum grounds, with Avril Hong and Shery Ahn for The Asia Trade segment on Bloomberg TV, Dr. Han shared his perspective on the current state of Silicon Box’s business and the semiconductor industry, growth in AI demand, and the company’s expansion plans.

Key Insights from the interview

Artificial intelligence is attracting significant attention, but AI and high-performance computing applications represent only about 40% of the company’s current demand. Silicon Box’s customer markets also include RF, data centers, electric vehicles, satellite and space technology, mobile, power, and wearables. “We see big demand in AI, of course, but we also start to see the recovery in a lot of other businesses including mobile, automotive, and especially power chips,” said Dr. Han.

The state-of-the-art facility, which began mass production in late 2023, produces advanced panel-level packaging (PLP) exclusively and is the largest of its kind globally in terms of production capacity. Silicon Box’s proprietary technology is able to support chiplet integration by addressing challenges in performance, scalability and costs in wafer-level and traditional packaging schemes.

Record-Breaking Yield and Factory Progress

One of the more remarkable aspects of Silicon Box’s 100-million-unit shipment milestone, is that the production facility has exceeded co-founder and CEO, Dr. BJ Han, and his technical leadership team’s long term track record for industry leading yield which was 99.7% at wafer scale.

“Silicon Box is proud to announce that this shipment milestone demonstrates our team’s capability to execute advanced panel-level packaging at high volume, but more importantly, at very high yield,” shared JH Yee, Head of Operations at Silicon Box. “Our founding team in operations and technology, including myself, have been working under Dr. BJ Han’s leadership over multiple decades, at multiple semiconductor packaging companies. The Tampines factory had its grand opening in July 2023, with mass production starting later that year. In 2024, the facility achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification, followed by ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certifications in 2025. These certifications underscore Silicon Box’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, employee well-being and sustainability management, respectively.

Expansion of Manufacturing Capacity on Track

Silicon Box's 100-million-unit production milestone demonstrates that the company is on track to achieve its capacity and production targets at its flagship facility, with full capacity installation expected by 2028. Meanwhile, the company’s second manufacturing facility, to be located in Novara, Piedmont, Italy, is expected to begin production in 2028. The planned site which is larger than Singapore is expected to replicate production capacity and bring native test capability to Europe. Father’s Day is more than a date on the calendar or a commercial celebration. It is a reminder to honor fatherhood and paternal bonds. Historically, the day was established to commemorate the sacrifice and resilience of war veterans who were fathers. In modern times, its significance has evolved with the emerging reality fathers are not just breadwinners and disciplinarians, but also caregivers, nurturers, and emotional anchors.

To highlight its importance, we spoke with three of our working fathers – Andy, Meng Keat ,and Suresh, about how they balance fatherhood with their professional life. Through their stories, we learned how these men demonstrated strength through gentleness and that success isn’t measured by achievements alone, but by the alignment of values – doing right by their children and colleagues.

We hope their unique experiences in fatherhood inspire us to appreciate all father figures who choose to be present, both at work and at home – a reminder that there’s so much more to life than just the daily grind.

Personal & Professional Journey

How did becoming a father change your perspective on work and life?

Suresh: Becoming a father made me realize that work is just one part of life, not the whole of it. It also gave me a greater sense of purpose. Everything I do now has a deeper meaning because I want to set an example for my kids.

Meng Keat: Becoming a father shifted my perspective completely. Life is no longer just about career milestones. I’ve learned to value time, relationships, and balance much more than before.

Andy: Becoming a father was a transformative experience that significantly shifted both my perspective on work and life. Priorities changed almost overnight. While career achievements remain important, the responsibility of raising a child made me realize that the time I spent with family and loved ones was irreplaceable.

How do you define success, both as a father and as a professional?

Suresh: Success as a father is raising kind and confident kids. Professionally, success is making a positive impact while staying true to my values. If I can go home at the end of the day knowing I did right by my family and my team, that’s a success.

Meng Keat: As a father, success is being someone my child can rely on and look up to. As a professional, it’s about continuous learning, contributing meaningfully to the team, and maintaining integrity in my work. Success means finding alignment between the two, where my growth at work supports my role at home.

Andy: As a father, success is defined by the relationships I build with my children, the lessons I impart, and the example I set for them. It’s not about perfection, but about being present, supportive, and actively involved in their lives.

How has your role as a father influenced your leadership style or teamwork at work?

Suresh: Fatherhood taught me to lead with empathy and patience. I’ve learned the value of encouragement and the importance of listening.

Meng Keat: Fatherhood has made me more understanding. I’m more aware that everyone has something they’re juggling beyond work. It’s helped me become a better teammate — more patient, more supportive, and more focused on long-term collaboration.

Andy: Becoming a father has deeply influenced the way I lead and collaborate at work. Parenthood has taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of being fully present—qualities that are essential in any team environment.

Work-Life Balance and Challenges

What are the biggest challenges you face balancing your career and fatherhood?

Suresh: As a father, I try to do my level best to fulfill my family and kid’s needs, in order to maintain that work with integrity and happiness in whatever I do.

Meng Keat: The biggest challenge is distance. Working in Singapore while my son is in Malaysia with his grandmother means I must make every visit count. I travel back 2–3 times a month, and it’s emotionally tough not being there for every moment. But it also makes the time we have together even more precious.

Andy: One of the hardest things is dealing with the guilt—when I’m at work, I worry I’m missing milestones at home; when I’m home, I wonder if I’m letting my team down.”

How do you manage your time and priorities between work and family?

Suresh: Because I am working shifts, I plan in advance according to my changing schedule to ensure that I have enough time to spend with family.

Meng Keat: It takes careful planning and a lot of discipline. I try to make workdays in Singapore highly focused so that when I travel back to Malaysia, I can be fully present with my son. I rely on calendars, open communication with my team, and most importantly — setting clear boundaries.

Andy: Balancing work and family requires a proactive approach, setting boundaries, and prioritizing tasks. By using time-blocking, scheduling family time, and delegating where possible, you can create a more balanced and fulfilling life. 

What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned about being a working father?

Suresh: I developed greater responsibility and ownership, ensuring I handled everything with integrity.

Meng Keat: That presence isn’t just physical — it’s emotional and intentional. Even when I’m not in the same place as my son, regular video calls, sending photos, and being engaged in his daily life mean a lot. Fatherhood taught me that consistency builds connection.

Andy: The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that presence matters more than perfection. Kids don’t need you to have all the answers—they just need you to show up, consistently and wholeheartedly. Being a working father has taught me how important it is to set boundaries, manage time wisely, and be fully present in the moment, whether I’m in a meeting or helping with homework.

What advice would you give to other fathers or soon-to-be fathers in the company?

Suresh: Be prepared to enjoy every moment and be ready to answer all curious questions from kids.

Meng Keat: Don’t be too hard on yourself. Whether you're near or far, your effort and LOVE matter. Stay connected in the ways you can, and trust that being a father will also make you a stronger, more thoughtful professional.

Andy: Don’t be afraid to set boundaries. Take your paternity leave. Show up for your kids without guilt. The early years go by fast. And remember—being a great dad is one of the most powerful ways you can lead by example, both at home and in the workplace.

Memories & Reflections

What are some of your favorite memories of being a father, and how have those moments shaped you?

Suresh: I cherish every moment I have with my children, even during their small achievements in school. They all motivate me to support their dreams and goals.

Meng Keat: One of my favorite memories is experiencing so many “firsts” together with my son —our first playtime, his first laugh, the first time he held onto my finger. Each of those moments reminded me how meaningful even the smallest experiences can be, and they’ve taught me to appreciate the present — both at home and at work.

Andy: Some of my favorite memories as a father are the quiet, everyday moments—reading bedtime stories, teaching my child to ride a bike, or being there when they first walked into school. These moments aren’t flashy, but they’re incredibly grounding. They’ve taught me the value of patience, consistency, and showing up—traits that have deeply shaped my personal and professional life.

Is there a particular moment at work or at home that stands out as especially rewarding or challenging?

Meng Keat: One challenging moment was when I had to miss his first time sitting up on his own because I was at work. It was hard, but I focused on being there for the next milestone—and I’ve been lucky to witness many others since. It reminded me that being a parent is a long journey, not a single moment.

Andy: There was a time when I managed to troubleshoot a major IT issue remotely while holding my baby during nap time. It was a logistical nightmare but also a powerful moment—it proved to me that I could still rise to the occasion in both roles, even when the worlds collide.

If you could change one thing about your journey as a working father, what would it be?

Suresh: I don’t want to change anything. I have enjoyed the good moments and also learned from the bad.

Meng Keat: If I could change one thing, I would have started earlier to find a better rhythm between work and family life. The early months taught me how important it is to create space for both — more happy moments with my son and dedicated focus at work. Striking that balance has made me more effective and fulfilled in both areas, and I’m grateful for the growth it’s brought.

Andy: I would have learned to say “no” earlier. Saying “no” to the non-essential means saying “yes” to what really matters—my family, my health, and my peace of mind.

Looking Ahead

What are your hopes or goals for your children, and how do you see your work supporting those aspirations?

Suresh: I hope my children grow up with confidence in who they are and a sense of curiosity about the world. I want my work to model persistence, integrity, and purpose. Qualities I hope they’ll carry with them whatever they choose to pursue.

Meng Keat: I hope my son grows up feeling secure, loved, and encouraged to follow his own path. By staying committed to my work and showing resilience, I hope to set an example of what it means to be dedicated and responsible.

Andy: I hope they grow up confident, compassionate, and curious about the world. I want them to see that hard work matters—but not at the cost of well-being or relationships. I hope my work ethic shows them that dedication can coexist with love and balance.

How do you hope your children will remember your work ethic and your role as their father?

Suresh: I hope they remember that I showed up not just at my job, but in their lives. That I worked hard and I want them to feel I gave them the best of me.

Meng Keat: I hope he knows I showed up — with heart and purpose — building a life where he feels loved, inspired, and always my priority.

Andy: I want them to remember that I showed up—for them and for my responsibilities. That I worked hard, but not harder than I loved. That I didn’t just build systems or solve problems—but that I built a life where they knew they were my top priority.

Andy, Meng Keat, and Suresh have shown us that the skills learned through parenting – empathy, patience, resilience and consistency -- don’t detract from professional excellence, they enhance it. Mother's Day serves as an annual reminder to reflect on the remarkable impact mothers have on individuals and society. It offers a dedicated moment to express gratitude for the everyday acts of love, care, and sacrifice that often go unrecognized.

To mark its significance, Silicon Box asked three of our working mothers – Katy, May and Jick, who have been with Silicon Box since its early days – how they have navigated the complexities of balancing their professional aspirations with the joys and challenges of motherhood.

Personal & Professional Journey

What inspired you to pursue your current career path, and how has motherhood influenced that journey?

Katy: I am a technical trainer in the learning and development field, so continuous learning has always been a vital part of my life. After becoming a mother, I learned to be more patient and view things from different perspectives. Previously, I focused solely on adult learning theory. However, during my pregnancy, I was eager to be a good mom, so I read The Psychology Book (DK) and attended several psychological courses from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) to understand how to better interact with my child. Interestingly, the new psychological theories I learned for my daughter improved my communication and performance with my team, because I could break down complex technical concepts into easier, more memorable content.

May: I have always been passionate about problem resolution as an engineer. Motherhood has given me a new sense of purpose and drive that further fuels this passion. My role also requires me to work shifts. Since becoming a mother, I've learned to be more efficient and focused on every aspect of my work. I now prioritize my time better, allowing me to fully commit to my child at home while meeting work expectations.

Jick: I was fortunate to dedicate most of my time to my kids for the first seven years of motherhood. It was only after I transitioned into the semiconductor industry that my career began to evolve. Now that my children are older, I have more time to focus on my work and build my professional path while still being present for them.

Work-Life Balance and Company Culture

How do you balance your responsibilities at work with your role as a mother? What strategies or routines help you manage your time and energy between work and family?

Katy: I am still figuring out how to balance work and family. At this stage of motherhood, I need to pay more attention to my family since my daughter is still young. Although my parents help, she still prefers to be with me, especially when she is unwell. What has worked so far is compartmentalizing my focus: at work, I concentrate on work, and at home, I focus on my daughter.

May: I try to plan ahead as much as possible. If I know I must work overtime that day, I make alternative childcare arrangements around pickup times. I identify "time-wasting" activities, like mindless social media scrolling, and use that time to rest and relax instead. I prioritize getting enough sleep each night to ensure I'm well-rested and ready for the challenges ahead.

Jick: I am incredibly grateful to my husband, who helps with most of the kids' homework. Finding a job I love and my love for my family gives me the energy to keep going!

Can you share a challenge you've faced balancing work and motherhood and how you overcame it?

Katy: Last December, my daughter and husband both came down with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). I had to shuttle between three locations: one at home and another at the hospital. Thankfully, I have supportive colleagues who helped me reorganize deadlines and a kind boss who offered to cover for me. My parents were also able to help care for my daughter at home.

May: My child recently had a high fever and needed to be hospitalized because it took a while to subside. Due to the nature of my job, which requires me to work shifts, my manager and I had to rework operational scheduling with the rest of my team. It was difficult, but thankfully, Silicon Box's supportive culture regarding family commitments allowed me to navigate this period without major issues.

Jick: I believe I balance both aspects well, thanks to the incredible support from my husband and not to forget my boss who always allows me to take urgent leave when needed to attend to my kids.

Personal Insights & Advice

What is one lesson you've learned from motherhood that you apply to your work life?

Katy: One significant lesson I've learned from motherhood that I apply to my work life is the importance of patience and truly listening to others.

May: Time management. Only after becoming a mother did, I realize how much time I have each day and how effective time management can benefit both my work and home life.

Jick: Being patient.

What advice would you offer to other mothers who are navigating their careers?

Katy: Remember that we are all different and face unique situations, so don't feel pressured if the advice doesn't resonate with you.

May: Take things slowly. No one is a perfect mother from day one, so don't be too hard on yourself when you make mistakes.

Are you especially proud of a particular moment as a working mother?

Katy: Always proud of myself because I was brave enough to choose to be a mother… ��

May: While I don't have a specific moment, I often reflect on and feel proud that I am fully committed to supporting my child's development.

Jick: Working mothers essentially juggle two major jobs, and you can never quit being a mother!

Looking Forward

How do you hope to inspire your children through your work and career?

Katy: I want to teach them to never stop learning. Grades aren't what matters; the ability to learn is what truly counts. Never think you know everything.

May: I hope to show them that with hard work and dedication; anyone can achieve their goals.

Jick: I once told my kids that regardless of their future aspirations, the most important principle is to "Deliver what you have committed." Since the beginning of my career, I have dreamt of leading my own team and sharing my knowledge with the younger generation so they can eventually take over. Much like raising my children, I aim to nurture them to become independent and trustworthy individuals.

While Katy, May and Jick’s paths to motherhood differ, we find a common thread of resilience, adaptability, and support when they share their challenges, hopes, and pride in growing personally and professionally. Their insights serve as a reminder that challenges can lead to growth, and with determination and the proper support, it is possible to thrive in both roles.

Navigating the Path to Achieving Occupational Health and Safety Excellence

After working as an engineer in the electronics industry for over a decade, Anand, driven by his passion for improving processes and ensuring a safe work environment, decided to pivot and take up an opportunity with the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team. He has not looked back since.

Anand aims to be an EHS champion at Silicon Box, continuously optimizing the company's operational standards and employee well-being to fulfill its mission. Within a year of joining, he has helped Silicon Box achieve certifications in quality management (ISO 9001:2015), occupational health and safety management (ISO45001:2018), and environmental management systems (ISO14001:2015).

To mark the importance of International Day for Safety and Health at Work, we spotlight Anand, our EHS officer, as he shares insights on the ISO45001:2018 certification process and what his role entails.

Overview of the ISO 45001 Certification Process

What did the ISO 45001 certification process entail?

The ISO 45001 certification process was no small feat! In addition to writing policies, protocols, and license applications, we had to implement a series of routine meetings, training courses, and tests designed to mitigate health and safety risks. We created safety management systems from scratch, which included developing informational materials, conducting regular safety meetings, and establishing an internal audit routine to prepare our employees for emergencies.

We also had to ensure that relevant colleagues were certified in risk management by taking the bizSAFE Level 2 courses – a key requirement for our business. The uncertainty about covering all bases for the final audit certainly kept me awake at night, as obtaining certification for Silicon Box was of utmost importance to me.

What did you learn from the ISO 45001 certification process?

Change management can be achieved with the right approach .

One of the most significant challenges was not the certification process but fostering colleagues' understanding. Since we had the opportunity to build safety policies from the ground up, many team members with extensive experience in previous organizations were eager to share their best practices. To address this, we engaged with our colleagues to understand their concerns and effectively communicated the purpose and benefits of the selected protocols that would work for our company.

Gap analysis insights helped identify hurdles.

The insights gained from a gap analysis exercise were an essential aspect of the certification journey. We discovered that many employees required training and certifications from accredited providers due to Silicon Box's unique technological processes. Although organizing these courses was initially challenging due to competing business priorities, it became necessary to meet business demands as our production capacity increased.

Have contingency plans that are flexible to operational demands.

Reflecting on the entire certification journey, I learned the importance of enabling colleagues to fulfill their operational responsibilities while meeting certification requirements. Sometimes, urgent operational tasks take precedence over planned training sessions that we have already spent weeks preparing.

Moving forward, we realized that incorporating contingency training plans into our initial strategy would have been beneficial to balance operational needs with certification implementation.

Employee Engagement and Cultural Transformation

How did you involve your colleagues and motivate them to prioritize a robust, safe work environment?

Consistent communication was key to engaging employees in our mission to create a safer workplace. By enabling an environment of transparency and open dialogue, we encouraged staff to voice their concerns and contribute their ideas. This collaborative approach helped to build a culture that prioritized health and safety.

We embraced an "Employee Safety First" philosophy that places individual well-being at the forefront of our priorities. We focused on identifying critical areas for improvement by asking essential questions: "Which safety protocols will most directly impact our employees?" and "What urgent actions need to be taken to ensure their safety?" Through this frame of thinking, we ensured all employees were familiar with evacuation procedures, followed by department-specific training needs. By centering efforts on enhancing employee safety first, a solid foundation was established for further improvements.

How would you describe the evolution of our safety culture since the beginning of the ISO 45001 journey?

Digital Transformation in Occupational Safety

What were some digital tools that aided the implementation of safety management?

Cloud-enabled services have greatly improved our safety management systems by streamlining processes, enhancing communication, and facilitating training. This has made it easier for my colleagues and I to engage with safety protocols.

For example, we have digitized daily work permit approvals and mandatory training to reduce physical paperwork and conserve workforce resources. To accommodate contractors in their required training, we increased accessibility and flexibility by converting our in-person Safety Induction Course (SIC) into a self-learning online module with an assessment quiz.

Additionally, we implemented an Electronic Permit-to-Work system that facilitates quicker approvals and allows managers to stay connected with our contractors. These digital transformations save our colleagues significant time and stress, enabling them to focus on more fulfilling tasks.

Advice to safety professionals planning to undertake the ISO ISO 45001 certification process

How has leading this certification process contributed to your professional growth?

Leading the certification process from start to finish was challenging but it was equally fulfilling, and I see it as an invaluable opportunity. I experienced a great sense of achievement, which boosted my confidence in accomplishing such a challenging task.

If you could restart the certification process, what would you do differently?

If circumstances allow, I will involve representatives from various departments right from the beginning to create a sense of ownership and ensure it is a team effort for continuity.

What advice would you give to safety professionals just beginning their ISO 45001 journey in this era of digitalization?

Using a digital platform in safety management helped reduce administrative tasks, making our work more engaging. We were able to collaborate with more colleagues on various initiatives to raise safety awareness. In addition, AI technology can to some degree help you understand the complexities of ISO certifications and monitor evolving legislative and regulatory requirements.

Since becoming an EHS officer, I have conducted numerous training sessions, including a workshop on first aid for small children. One day, a colleague called to thank me because the knowledge from my workshop helped save her niece. Hearing this impacted me. Beth, Chemical Engineering Major

Beth began her semiconductor career over 20 years ago as a working student. Captivated by the fast-paced and innovation-driven nature of the field, she has never looked back. Today, as a proud mother of two accomplished graduates—one of whom is following in her footsteps—Beth is more motivated than ever to take on new challenges and continue her lifelong passion for learning. Chia Ling, Chemistry Major

Chia Ling’s fascination with the vibrant spectrum of colors produced by transition metals ignited her passion for chemistry at university. However, it was the combination of technical challenges and real-world applications that inspired her to pursue an engineering role in the semiconductor industry. While she enjoyed the analytical aspects of her work, she hadn't realized how much she also enjoyed collaborating with people. Her mentor recognized this strength, saw her potential as a project manager, and encouraged her to take the leap. Initially hesitant, she embraced the challenge, and it proved to be a perfect fit. The role allowed her to broaden her skillset, have a greater impact on projects. This opportunity also allowed her to blend her scientific background with her desire to contribute to the development of innovative products, proving that with curiosity and determination, one can transform passion into impactful action.

“In chemistry, I was fascinated by how transition metals produce a variety of colors in compounds. My passion for data analysis, trend identification, and collaboration led me to pursue a career in STEM, where I could contribute to creating innovative products.”

What makes you most passionate about your field of work?

The constant evolution of technology means there's always something new to learn, which keeps me engaged and motivated. I'm particularly passionate about working on new products and technologies because it allows me to continuously grow and develop my skills. Being part of a team that's pushing the limits of what's achievable is incredibly rewarding, and it's a passion I enjoy sharing with my family, especially my son.”

What advice would you give young women considering a career in STEM?

Believe in yourself. Don't let stereotypes or outdated perceptions hold you back. Women offer unique perspective and skillsets that are valuable to the industry. Develop resilience, because you may encounter challenges, but don't let those discourage you. And most importantly, find mentors and build a strong network of support, both personally and professionally.

What changes would make STEM more attractive to women?
I think it is important to create an inclusive and supportive environment. This means actively addressing unconscious bias and provide mentorship opportunities to women in STEM. And of course, promoting work-life balance isn't just a perk; it's essential for everyone, but especially for women who may still disproportionately carry the burden of family responsibilities. When women see that STEM offers not just exciting careers but also a supportive and equitable environment, I think we'll see a real shift.

Sin Yen, Chemical Engineering Major

Sin Yen was exposed to the semiconductor industry from a young age. Her hometown, Penang, is a semiconductor hub and she comes from a family of engineers.. Even as a mother of one, she did not hesitate to become one of Silicon Box’s earliest hires. Fortunately, she had the support of her family who encouraged her to take the leap as it would have been “a now or never opportunity to join a startup”, Sin Yen recalled. “My colleagues also helped me achieve a work-life balance because we support each other to keep things moving more efficiently.” Her journey exemplifies how great achievements stem from perseverance and collaboration.

"As a chemical engineer, I enjoy observing the cause-and-effect relationships of reactions. On the other hand, the semiconductor industry offers me the rewarding challenge of problem-solving. This fuels my passion for refining processes and simplifying work procedures to boost efficiency."

Shini, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Major

Shini began her journey with Silicon Box during its early days, becoming the second hire on her team and playing a vital role in supporting her lead engineer. As the youngest member, Shini brings a fresh perspective and a keen passion for problem-solving. Starting as an intern while completing her Master of Science, she embraced the challenge of cutting-edge technology and later transitioned to a full-time role. Shini is continuously in awe with how the smallest of changes can have a huge impact on each project and design.

“I am intrigued by the concept of entropy in both Physics and Circuit Theory. The dynamic nature and continuous innovation in the semiconductor industry excite me, and I am genuinely passionate about the future advancements in cutting-edge technologies.”

Unpacking #STEM Careers at Silicon Box

We topped off the celebration with a heartwarming luncheon, joined by Mike, our Head of Business, and Rebecca, our HR Lead. We shared personal stories and unraveled the nuances of navigating life while pursuing a career in STEM as women, discovering how similar our experiences are, even though we might have different backgrounds.

A key takeaway from our conversations was the importance of one's environment and support system in shaping a career in STEM that works for women. This is especially true in engineering and semiconductor companies that require shift work.

"For my team, we are predominantly women because our function is heavier on data analysis versus hands-on engineering-type work, but we are a valuable team to collaborate with because other engineering teams need our support and analytical approach to validate ideas with data," adds Sin Yen; proving another point that we should aim to remove the stigma of STEM careers being predominantly male because there are roles that women are increasingly needed and may even be better adapted to fill.

What do you love most about your job?

What’s something people don’t know about you?

My initial career dream was to become a Chemical Technologist, a path I eagerly began pursuing while studying and working in a research and development laboratory within the metals industry. However, as I delved deeper into my studies, I became captivated by the rapid expansion of the semiconductor industry. Companies like Motorola, Intel, TI, Amkor, PSI, and Vishay, to name a few, were frequently discussed during my senior year in university.

As I listened to my friends share their experiences working with innovative technologies in semiconductor manufacturing, my curiosity sparked. They spoke of the exciting atmosphere of working at the forefront of technological advancements, and I found myself increasingly drawn to the possibilities within that field.

Ultimately, I decided to pivot into semiconductor manufacturing. This new direction allowed me to engage with cutting-edge technology daily, becoming an integral part of an industry characterized by constant evolution and infinite possibilities—precisely what fuels my passion for my work at Silicon Box.

Looking back, I did become a Chemical Technologist briefly; however, fate guided me to a different path as an engineer, and the rest is history.

What’s your aspiration?

I'm working toward building my dream house, which serves as both a personal milestone and a motivation in my journey at Silicon Box. The company's success and the impact of our work inspire me daily, and that sense of achievement drives me toward both professional and personal goals.

How do you unwind after a busy day?

Silicon Box welcomes European Commission approval of €1.3 billion Italian State aid measure to support new advanced packaging facility in Novara

ROME, Italy, December 19 - Silicon Box, a global leader in advanced semiconductor packaging and system integration, welcomes the European Commission's approval of approximately €1.3 billion for its new manufacturing facility in Italy . The project, representing a total investment of €3.2 billion, will create 1,600 high-skilled jobs and establish Europe's most advanced semiconductor packaging facilities.

The investment supports the EU's strategic goal to produce 20% of the world's semiconductors by 2030 and marks Silicon Box's first manufacturing expansion beyond Singapore. With its proprietary large format panel-level process lines, the factory can scale up the packaging of chips 6 to 8 times more than traditional wafer-level packaging.

"This strategic investment in Italy represents a pivotal moment in Europe's semiconductor renaissance," says Dr. Byung Joon Han, Chief Executive Officer of Silicon Box. "By bringing our advanced packaging technologies to the heart of Europe, we're not just expanding our global footprint – we're creating a cornerstone of the EU's semiconductor ecosystem that will serve critical sectors from automotive to artificial intelligence."

Project Details and Timeline

The new first-of-its-kind advanced manufacturing facility in Novara will feature:

Panel-level packaging and heterogeneous integration capabilities
R&D center focusing on next-generation packaging solutions
Industry 4.0 automated manufacturing systems
Key net-zero technologies to minimize carbon footprint and environmental impact

Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2025, with initial production planned for Q1 2028. The plant is expected to be operating at full capacity in 2033, processing approximately 10,000 panels per week.

Regional Impact and Partnerships

Under the Italian measure, Silicon Box is committed to strengthening Italy’s and the wider EU semiconductor value chain by bringing in advancing packaging technologies, managing supply shortages through priority orders, and developing workforce training programs.

Silicon Box is already in talks with the local government to develop partnerships with educational institutions and workforce programs to cultivate a robust native talent which will include technicians and maintenance workers with expertise in automation, robotics, mechatronics, computer science, and graduates in electronic, mechanical, management, chemical and physical engineering.

ROME, Italy – The co-founders of Silicon Box, CEO Dr. Byung Joon (BJ) Han, Dr. Sehat Sutardja, and Weili Dai, together with the Minister Adolfo Urso, Presidente Alberto Cirio of the Piedmont region, and Mayor Alessandro Canelli of the municipality of Novara today announced that Novara in Piedmont will be the site of the company’s new, first-of-a-kind advanced semiconductor packaging and testing foundry. The parties signed a letter of intent outlining their commitment for collaboration related to the site and investment, this morning, at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy in Rome, subject to the European Commission approval of the planned financial support to be granted by Italy.

The site in Novara and Piedmont was selected from a shortlist of sites and regions in Northern Italy (Nord Italia) through a detailed evaluation process. This effort aimed at ensuring that selection be aligned with the requirements and conditions necessary for the planned facility, and prior commitments agreed between Silicon Box and the Italian government.

“Silicon Box’s advanced packaging facility in Novara is expected to create up to 1,600 highly paid jobs and bring first-of-a-kind advanced semiconductor packaging and testing capabilities to Italy, and to Europe,” said Dr. Byung Joon Han, CEO and cofounder of Silicon Box. “We appreciate the cooperation of all the sites, municipalities and regions that participated in our evaluation process. Every site was carefully reviewed and considered, and each had its own independent merits that reinforced our decision to build in Italy.”

Earlier this year, Silicon Box announced its intention to collaborate with the Italian government to invest up to €3.2B ($3.6B) in Northern Italy, as the site of a state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly and test facility. The facility will help meet critical demand for advanced packaging capacity to enable next generation technologies that Silicon Box anticipates by 2028. The multi-year investment replicates Silicon Box’s flagship foundry in Singapore, which has demonstrated capability and capacity for the world’s most advanced semiconductor packaging solutions, before further expansion into 3D integration and testing. The new integrated production facility is expected to serve as a catalyst for broader ecosystem investments and innovation in Italy, as well as the rest of the European Union.

“We are excited to bring Italy to the forefront of chiplet deployment and the semiconductor industry, through this investment into the world’s most advanced packaging solution. It will enhance competitive strengths in design, artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), electronic vehicles (EVs) and automotive, mobile, wearables, smart consumer, edge computing, and material sciences of the Italian ecosystem, and revolutionize Europe’s position in the global [semiconductors] supply chain,” said Dr. Sehat Sutardja, co founder and Chairman of Silicon Box.

“Design and planning for the facility is already underway, with construction to commence pending European Commission approval of planned financial support by the Italian State,” added co-founder, Weili Dai.

Silicon Box’s technology enables advanced chiplet integration (“advanced packaging”), on a large manufacturing format for scale and efficiency. The chiplet concept is an alternative to conventional semiconductor manufacturing, which focused on building entire systems on-chips (SoCs) on silicon wafers, then moving to traditional packaging processes. Chiplets describe manufacture of individual system modalities as standalone “chiplets” on a wafer, then integrating these separate functionalities into a system through advanced packaging, creating a system-in-package (SiPs).

The chiplet concept itself was introduced by Silicon Box co-founder Dr. Sutardja at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in 2015, where he was plenary speaker. Dr. Han is the inventor of semiconductor packaging solutions fundamental to enable chiplets through advanced packaging. Their long-standing collaboration has been the basis for Silicon Box’s record-breaking progress as a company in the semiconductor manufacturing space, traditionally dominated by a few large companies.

Silicon Box’s Novara factory is planned to begin construction second half of 2025, with initial production expected to begin in 2028.

ROME, Italy – 11 March 2024 - Silicon Box cutting-edge, advanced panel-level packaging foundry announced its intention to collaborate with the Italian government to invest up to $3.6B (€3.2B) in Northern Italy, as the site of a new, state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly and test facility. This facility will help meet critical demand for advanced packaging capacity to enable next generation technologies that Silicon Box anticipates by 2028. The multi-year investment will replicate Silicon Box’s flagship foundry in Singapore which has proven capability and capacity for the world’s most advanced semiconductor packaging solutions, then expand further into 3D integration and testing. When completed, the new facility will support approximately 1,600 Silicon Box employees in Italy. The construction of the facility is also expected to create several thousand more jobs, including eventual hiring by suppliers. Design and planning for the facility will begin immediately, with construction to commence pending European Commission approval of planned financial support by the Italian State.

As well as bringing the most advanced chiplet integration, packaging, and testing to Italy, Silicon Box’s manufacturing process is based on panel-level-production; a world leading, first-of-its-kind combination that is already shipping product to customers from its Singapore foundry. Through the investment, Silicon Box has plans for greater innovation and expansion in Europe, and globally. The new integrated production facility is expected to serve as a catalyst for broader ecosystem investments and innovation in Italy, as well as the rest of the European Union.

Advanced Packaging to Drive Innovation across Italian and European Semiconductor Ecosystems

Wafer fabrication facilities, often referred to as “fabs”, create chips on silicon wafers through various advanced processes. Packaging facilities, such as the one planned for Italy by Silicon Box, receive completed wafers from fabs, cut them into individual chips, assemble or “package” them into final products and test them for performance and quality. The finished or packaged chips are then shipped to customers which include specialty chip design companies, integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Notably, Silicon Box facilities specialize in advanced chiplet integration capabilities (“advanced packaging”), on a large manufacturing format for scale. The chiplet concept is an alternative to traditional semiconductor manufacturing, which focused on building entire systems-on-chips (SoCs) on silicon wafers, then moving to conventional packaging processes. Chiplets describe manufacture of individual system modalities as standalone chips or chiplets on a wafer, then integrating these separate functionalities into a system through advanced packaging, creating a system-in-package (SiPs). With this, advanced packaging technology comes to the forefront of semiconductor manufacturing innovation, in a new paradigm for the industry.

Towards a Chiplet Future

Silicon Box launches $2 billion, state-of-the-art advanced semiconductor packaging fab in Singapore to accelerate the future of computing and the AI Era

With chiplets at the forefront of semiconductor integration, the factory is ready to support its global customers and partners.

Singapore, July 2023 – Silicon Box, a cutting-edge semiconductor startup, today unveiled its SGD 2 billion advanced semiconductor packaging fab aimed at revolutionising the chip manufacturing sector, developing local capabilities, and boosting Singapore’s position as a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing. Silicon Box will hire and train thousands of high-level employees, with the support of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

The grand opening ceremony of the 73,000 sqm facility in Tampines, the size of 15 football fields, was graced by Mr Png Cheong Boon, Chairman EDB, and the company’s three co-founders Dr. Han Byung Joon - Chief Executive Officer of Silicon Box - Dr. Sehat Sutardja - Chairman of the board, and Weili Dai.

“Silicon Box is well poised to solve the unique challenge for chiplets, which are essential to power emergent technologies. Our team of experts with over 30 years of experience, critical ecosystem of partners, and proprietary interconnection technology will shorten the design cycle of chiplets, lower new device costs, reduce power consumption and enable faster-time-to-market for industry partners involved in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), data centres, electronic vehicles (EVs), mobile, and wearables” Dr. BJ Han says.

Transforming the semiconductor industry with advanced chiplet interconnection technology

Despite its wide potential and high demand across emerging technologies, deployment of chiplets continues to face challenges with manufacturing capacity, complexity and cost.

“The concept of chiplets – building larger systems on chips with modular components produced at scale – allows us to enable chip designers to focus on optimizing for performance and low power consumption in large chip designs, at a cost that is not prohibitive,” Dr. Sehat Sutardja explains. “Silicon Box’s proprietary fabrication method, sets a new standard for design flexibility and electrical performance at low cost. This agility in semiconductor design cycles enables the industry to take advantage of the chiplet concept and bring designs that double computing performance, at up to four times lower costs for graphical processors and high-performance computing chips, and up to half the cost for more widely consumed mobile processors.”

World Class Partnerships and Global Industry Adoption

Silicon Box has formed partnerships globally with industry leaders to enable semiconductor solutions required to power next generation applications. “What the users of tomorrow will expect when it comes to their end experience, whether it is on a mobile device, electric vehicle, or an end application utilizing generative AI, requires fundamentally different approaches to semiconductor manufacturing such as the advanced panel level packaging technology in which Silicon Box stands at the forefront. ” Co-Founder Weili Dai added. “We founded Silicon Box to meet this demand. This is our first multi billion dollar factory and we are eager to scale rapidly to support our customers and partners, globally. Many of these customers and partners have come to the Grand Opening to celebrate this key moment for Silicon Box and the industry, with us. Developing talent for qualitative transformation of the manufacturing sector

Digitalisation, accelerated by the pandemic, has increased demand for talent in high-end engineering. Leveraging the combined expertise and patents of the co-founders of Silicon Box and commitment to R&D, the startup aims to attract the brightest minds and digital experts to join the innovative team at the facility. In collaboration with EDB, Silicon Box will be providing training opportunities for graduates from institutes of higher learning to contribute to the development of radical new technologies to meet this demand.

End-to-end commitment on economic resource efficiency at scale

Operating with economically sound processes to minimise the negative effects on the environment, Silicon Box ensures that its interconnected chiplets are energy efficient at scale. Built with resource efficiency in mind in keeping with industry best practices, the facility includes:

A Reverse Osmosis De-Ionized (RO-DI) water filtration system that purifies NeWater for manufacturing processes.
Fully contained wastewater treatment facility enables 50% of post-manufacturing waste water to be recycled and reused.
Multi-grid voltage system and solar panels improve the capacity of transmission lines and distributes power consumption more efficiently.
Energy efficient window glass and blinds, coupled with high-quality insulation, reduces energy required for cooling.
