The award recognizes Dr. Han’s exceptional contributions to onshore advanced integration and packaging technology in Italy, strengthening the wider EU semiconductor ecosystem 

ROME, ITALY, 15 April 2025 -- Silicon Box co-founder and CEO, Dr. Byung Joon “BJ” Han, an influential figure in the semiconductor industry, has been awarded the 2025 Leonardo International Award. The recognition was presented by Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, in honor of Dr. Han’s significant contributions to Italy's technological landscape through highly innovative and strategically important investments that create valuable employment opportunities. 


“I am truly humbled to receive this recognition as a contributor to Italy’s industry,” said Dr. Han. “I dedicate this award to the employees of Silicon Box who have contributed in our mission to revolutionize the semiconductor industry with innovative and sustainable technologies. I share this achievement with my Silicon Box co-founders and lifelong friends, Weili Dai and Dr. Sehat Sutardja.” 


The Leonardo Award 2025 Ceremony took place at Villa Madama in Rome, in the presence of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In a compelling closing address, Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the importance of resilience, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit in defining Italian excellence. Drawing on the Latin proverb “verba movement, exempla trahunt” - “words move people, examples compel them” - Ms. Meloni highlighted how initiatives celebrating Italian achievement serve not merely as celebrations but as inspirational teaching moments.

The event was attended by many distinguished guests including Deputy Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani, President of Confindustria (Italy's association for manufacturing and service companies) Emanuele Orsini, and Vice Presidente of Agenzia ICE (Italian Trade Agency) Matteo Zoppas, who also presented awards. Italian Ambassador to Singapore, Dante Brandi was present to support the achievement of Dr. Han for bringing the first Singapore-based winner for a Leonardo International Award and strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two countries. “Dr. Han’s recognition is a clear signal of the growing economic cooperation between Italy and Singapore, built on shared values of innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth,” said Dante Brandi, Italian Ambassador to Singapore. “Silicon Box’s investment in Italy is not only a significant technological achievement, but also a strong bridge between two countries committed to excellence.

In 2024, Silicon Box announced an investment of €3.2 billion to build a first-of-its-kind semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Piedmont, Italy. This initiative is projected to create 1,600 new highly skilled jobs and aligns with the EU's strategic goal to produce 20% of the world's semiconductors by 2030. This milestone marks Silicon Box's first manufacturing expansion beyond Singapore. "I believe in Italy's fundamental education of science and technology, as well as in Italian passion to achieve excellence for advancing the semiconductor industry. Together, [Silicon Box aims] to establish Italy as a center of the semiconductor renaissance," Dr. Han added.

The annual awards ceremony is organized by Comitato Leonardo – Italian Quality Committee, established in 1993 on the common initiative of Confindustria, the Italian Trade  Agency (ITA) and a group of top entrepreneurs, with the aim of promoting and establishing Italian Quality around the world. The Leonardo International Award is only presented on occasion, when a person whose outstanding professional activity has significantly contributed to cultural and economic ties between Italy and their respective countries. Dr. Han’s recognition by Comitato Leonardo underscores the critical role that innovation and international collaboration play in today’s global economy.

ROME, Italy, December 19 - Silicon Box, a global leader in advanced semiconductor packaging and system integration, welcomes the European Commission's approval of approximately €1.3 billion for its new manufacturing facility in Italy . The project, representing a total investment of €3.2 billion, will create 1,600 high-skilled jobs and establish Europe's most advanced semiconductor packaging facilities. The investment supports the EU's strategic goal to produce 20% of the world's semiconductors by 2030 and marks Silicon Box's first manufacturing expansion beyond Singapore. With its proprietary large format panel-level process lines, the factory can scale up the packaging of chips 6 to 8 times more than traditional wafer-level packaging. "This strategic investment in Italy represents a pivotal moment in Europe's semiconductor renaissance," says Dr. Byung Joon Han, Chief Executive Officer of Silicon Box. "By bringing our advanced packaging technologies to the heart of Europe, we're not just expanding our global footprint – we're creating a cornerstone of the EU's semiconductor ecosystem that will serve critical sectors from automotive to artificial intelligence." Project Details and Timeline The new first-of-its-kind advanced manufacturing facility in Novara will feature: Panel-level packaging and heterogeneous integration capabilities R&D center focusing on next-generation packaging solutions Industry 4.0 automated manufacturing systems Key net-zero technologies to minimize carbon footprint and environmental impact Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2025, with initial production planned for Q1 2028. The plant is expected to be operating at full capacity in 2033, processing approximately 10,000 panels per week. Regional Impact and Partnerships Under the Italian measure, Silicon Box is committed to strengthening Italy’s and the wider EU semiconductor value chain by bringing in advancing packaging technologies, managing supply shortages through priority orders, and developing workforce training programs.
